In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Iran launched missile strikes early Sunday targeting the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, widely regarded as the technological backbone of Israel’s security and scientific research.

The attack ignited a fire in at least one laboratory building, causing substantial damage to the prestigious institution known for breakthroughs in chemistry, biology, and artificial intelligence. This strike follows Israeli air assaults on over 100 Iranian military and nuclear sites, including uranium enrichment facilities, which Tehran denounces as acts of aggression and violations of international law.

Founded in 1934, the Weizmann Institute had never before suffered direct damage from military conflict, making this attack a rare and symbolic blow to Israel’s civilian scientific infrastructure. Left-wing analysts interpret Iran’s missile strike as a justified response to Israel’s unprovoked aggression against Iranian sovereignty and nuclear development.

The assault on scientific facilities underscores the broader imperialist dynamics at play, where technological and military advancements are weaponized to maintain regional dominance, often at the expense of civilian lives and international norms.

The missile strike on the Weizmann Institute occurred amidst a massive Iranian barrage of over 150 ballistic missiles and drones targeting Israeli cities and military installations, including the strategic port of Bandar Abbas and nuclear sites like Isfahan. While Israeli defense systems intercepted many projectiles, several caused damage and casualties, including in Bat Yam and Tamra.

Russia, China, and multiple countries have condemned Israel’s initial attacks on Iran, warning that Tel Aviv’s military adventurism risks dragging the Middle East into a catastrophic war and possible nuclear disaster. Progressive voices worldwide call for an immediate end to hostilities, emphasizing diplomacy, respect for sovereignty, and opposition to imperialist militarism.
